Default My story/amputation

Well I raced motorcycle as a young man and had a wreck that shattered my leg. No big deal a few pins and a plate or two. Had all hardware taken out along with some extra surgeries (all together 21).

Well basically after 23 1/2 years a staph infection lay dormant in my leg.
While Adding a room on to our house a 2/4 hits me in the shin, 6 months and the darn thing doesn't heal. Oh My....do some testing and find out theirs a bad boy infection. The the good doctors drill out 80% of my leg to get the bad bone out...little cameras and everything...I felt very special, I then spent 1 year in a wheel chair to have leg get back its bone density back. My personal opinion wheel chairs suck , why? because people look beyond you and not at you, you dont count or that the way it seems. So always make eye contact and say hello, the people down there need it.
Any way after 1 year out of the chair, my infection came roaring back. Went to work at 7 and was fine my 10:00 breack from my Knee down the leg exploded with infection. Burst through the skin and I left a trail of fulid on my way to my car , shortly after that they amputated my leg.
I know battle phantom pains on a semi regular basis. Any recommendations?

Also very nice to be here.

Thank you,

wfo

Looks like life has been a hellofa ride WFO. You are not alone here, as several
site members are amputees of one sort or another.

Glad to have you on-board..

it's true, there are a few other gimps hobbling about... me being one of them.

sorry to hear about the loss. be thankful for the time that you were able to keep that leg while the staff infection lay dormant. As to the chair... don't hate it too much. If you don't already know... you will. Can't wear those peg-legs forever and hopping and crutches tear the hell out of your body as you grow older.

Anywho... phantom pain is one of my 3 MMJ qualifiers. While I don't have much advice as the behavior, intensity and irritations vary from person to person... massage for good blood flow and not pushing yourself to the edge may help.
I'm also an A.B.C. Certified Technician in Orthotics & Prosthetics, so if I can answer any specifics for you, strictly off the record, feel free to PM me. I'm not a clinician but I have played on in the bedroom... ha-ha. j/k. But seriously... lost my left foot back in '96, so if I can be of help, just hit me up and I"ll get back to ya when I can.

Good luck and God Bless man!

Cool

Hi! Good morning everyone!

Someday, and I know it's a ways out...medical science will be growing body parts, that's going to help a lot of people.

Some of the things that will be happening in the future...just blows my mind.

Welcome wforider!

Hey wfo good to have you here !

As far as the Phantom Pain management goes for me it's lots of good meds and a little of my home made blackberry elixir,
little bit goes a long ways ! lol

Being an upper limb amputee I can relate but hearing from a few of my friends that have had legs amputated, leg P/P can be more intense. But it also has to do with the nature of the injury.
I can tell you after 25 years mine have become less frequent but in my opinion it makes them more intense when they do.

Hit me up if you ever need to talk. And again welcome to the forum.

Has anyone had any experience with mirror therapy? I wanted to try it with hubby, but BOTH his hands are messed up, so it wouldn't help anyway...
I've read about it, not seen any REAL people use it tho.

Cheers,

WFO

@K9HOHRIVER: An absolutely great post, guy! And I believe you're right on the nose with it too, but it's been made into a political issue.

We all have to remember to support embryonic stem cell research in a loud voice. At least as loud, if not louder than, our pro-mmj voice.

Embryonic stem cell research and especially propagation of new strains, will eventually, I'm sure, cure all of man's ills, and allow us to regenerate parts just like a plant or a salamander. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n3960219.shtml

We're gonna get there some day, but we've still got to fight ass-hats who would block what seems to be the obvious route to universal cures.

RF,

I don't disagree with the idea of the stem cells, but I do need to ask...are
there other advanced nations (like the UK) that are able to access these
embryo stem cells?

Just so folks know, I am really trying hard to limit the amount of editing I do,
and in this case rather than remove it myself, could I ask you to edit the
inflammatory political comments from your post? We really don't need that here,
and some of what you posted would be considered "fightin' words" for those
across the isle from your political views. (still, I do agree with you about Phelps!)
